Real Lives, Real Stories: A Simple Test with Life-Changing Results

Real Lives, Real Stories.

Through our series of real-life stories, we share the heartfelt journeys of families and individuals. These stories highlight the motivations and experiences behind their estate planning decisions, emphasising the real impact and importance of planning for the future.

Meet Pete: A Dad, Husband, and Survivor

Pete, a father of twin daughters in their early 20s and husband to his lovely wife, is in his mid-50s. His story is a powerful reminder of the importance of regular health screenings and keeping plans up to date.

A Simple Test with Life-Changing Results – Like many in their mid-50s, Pete received an NHS test kit in the mail. Screening can spot bowel cancer at an early stage, when it’s most likely to treatable. Research shows that more than 9 in 10 people survive bowel cancer when it’s diagnosed at the earliest stage.

Pete completed the ‘poo’ sample and sent it off, not expecting anything significant. When he received a callback, he was told that 9 out of 10 callbacks are all clear, but a colonoscopy was recommended to be safe. Unfortunately, Pete’s results were not the all-clear he hoped for. Doctors discovered a 45mm tumour in his colon, which had likely been growing slowly over time.

The Shock and Swift Action – The diagnosis was a complete shock to Pete. He had felt well and had no symptoms. However, the healthcare team acted swiftly. Within weeks, Pete underwent surgery to remove the tumour and his colon, which was replaced with a stoma bag. This was followed by weeks of precautionary chemotherapy. The quick action and expert care provided by the healthcare professionals were crucial in his treatment and recovery.

Financial Protection in Times of Crisis – Pete emphasized the relief he felt knowing he had income protection and critical illness cover in place. These measures took away the financial worries, allowing him to focus solely on his recovery. However, this experience also made him realize that his Will was outdated. His work had taken him across the globe, and his Will was originally made in Hong Kong. Since moving back to the UK with his family, it was no longer relevant.

A Wake-Up Call – Prompted by his health scare, Pete decided it was time to update his Will. He said, “Like many, I just didn’t think this would happen to me. I think we all believe we are invincible, so you can imagine it’s been a terrifying rollercoaster of emotions. I’m just so glad to have the great care and help from the brilliant healthcare professionals, the right protection in place through sick pay and critical illness as well as life cover, and the opportunity to update my Wills and plans to protect my family. You just never know.”

Spreading Awareness – Pete is passionate about raising awareness about the importance of regular health screenings and having up-to-date plans, whether that is your Will, Lasting Power of Attorney, sick pay, or critical illness cover. His story is a testament to the fact that taking proactive steps, both in terms of health and financial planning, can provide peace of mind and protection for the future.
